Fonts Matter!
Fonts do a lot of quiet work on a website. They shape how content feels, how easy it is to read, and even how trustworthy or modern a brand appears. What’s important to know is that a font isn’t just “a font.” The same typeface can look dramatically different depending on how it’s used.
Here are a few key factors that influence how a font actually appears on a website:
Font Weight
Font weight refers to how thick or thin the characters are (for example: light, regular, medium, bold). A lighter weight can feel refined and airy, while a heavier weight can feel strong, confident, or more attention-grabbing. Changing the weight alone can completely alter the personality of a headline or paragraph—even when the font itself stays the same. Everything about the two headings below is exactly the same except the font weight. But they convey very different feelings.

Font Size
Size isn’t just about readability—it affects hierarchy and emphasis. A font that feels cramped at one size can feel elegant and confident at another. Larger sizes tend to feel more open and intentional, while smaller sizes can feel dense or technical if not handled carefully. Everything about the fonts below is the same except for the size.

Kerning (Letter Spacing)
Kerning is the spacing between letters. Tight spacing can feel modern and polished, while looser spacing can feel more relaxed or upscale. Small adjustments here make a big difference in readability and tone, especially in headlines and buttons. Everything is the same about these buttons except for the kerning.
Font Selection
This is the easiest part to understand. The font itself sets the baseline personality: modern vs. traditional, friendly vs. formal, playful vs. serious. That said, font selection works hand-in-hand with weight, spacing, and size. A font you don’t love at first glance may look completely different once those details are tuned correctly. The two headings below obviously have very different feels!
The Big Takeaway
Choosing a font is less about picking one perfect typeface and more about choosing a strong foundation that can be adjusted thoughtfully. The same Google font can feel sleek, bold, friendly, or refined depending on how it’s styled. The examples below show how those adjustments can dramatically change the look and feel—without changing the font itself.
I have put together some more options for you below (keep scrolling). I left everything other than the fonts alone so you could see some different combinations. I listed the fonts in the grey section below each hero image.
